This millet variety is widely grown in hilly regions of Northern India Due to their resemblance to rice post removal of husk, they popular as “Sanwa rice”. They are consumed during the festive season among people who undergo fasting. Due to their low-calorie content, they are easily digestible.

Barnyard millet is the richest source of crude fiber and iron.
